International conference ‘For I Is Another. Single-Artist Museum and Its Possible Iterations’

The myth of the artist as a self‑made genius, who, by virtue of his talent, innate sensitivity, and individual effort, ascends to the heights of Parnassus, has been subjected to sustained critical scrutiny for several decades and is widely regarded as a relic of long-discredited aesthetic paradigms. Nevertheless, its resonance persists. Does it mean that a single‑artist museum remains a hostage to this myth and is condemned solely to its preservation? Or is it possible to conceive the mission of a single‑artist museum in a different way?

Conference programme

The conference For I Is Another: The Single-Artist Museum and Its Possible Iterations aims to contribute to a more nuanced and critically informed understanding of the role that single‑artist museums can play within today’s evolving cultural landscape. The conference will foster the exchange of perspectives and experiences among the representatives of institutions who are actively engaged in redefining this model, including: Roland Wetzel (director of Museum Tinguely), Laurence Sillars (director of Henry Moore Institute), Caroline Ugelstad (director of Collections Munchmuseet), Julita Dembowska (director of Władysław Hasior Gallery), Andrzej Przywara (cocreator of the Avant-Garde Institute in Warsaw) and Martin Cubjak (the director of Andy Warhol Museum of Modern Art). The guests will collectively reflect on the potential of single-artist museums — not only for a critical reinterpretation of art history but also for a deeper understanding of the world we live in.

About initiative

This conference is directly related to the exhibition Kantor: Vision Therapy, displayed at Cricoteka, in which the work of Tadeusz Kantor is juxtaposed with that of contemporary artists, thereby challenging the public perception of the creator of Cricoteka through the lens of the myth of the “artist-genius”.
