Arturas Bumšteinas: More Music for Sam

In this piece I am using a set of isolated stage-objects from various Samuel Beckett’s plays (a hat, rocking chair, heap of earth, dead tree-branch, tape recorder etc.) and developing a choreography of movements constructed in the relationship to these objects, while connecting them in such a way that these objects start to interact with each other. For example: audio tape from the spool runs through the automatically rocking chair and further gets attached to the dead tree branch which starts moving when this ‘apparatus’ is activated by the performer. Pre-recorded performer’s voice can be heard telling stories that I collected from very different people during my working process. I asked one hundred people to tell me their memories that are un-separable from music; memories of their lives that are infiltrated by music so much as if it would be some kind of diegetic soundtrack of their lives. Title ‘More Music for Sam’ refers to Beckett’s play ‘Rockaby’ (in my piece ‘more’ is the only word uttered live by the performer on stage). My piece starts where ‘Rockaby’ ends.

Inari Virmakoski
Visual and performance artist. She has been doing Performance Art (Live Art) since 1994 and presenting it around the world: in China, Mozambique, Cuba, USA, Peru, Chile and many European countries. My performances are often rituals and materials and ideas are collected during my rather nomadic life. I have lived and worked for eight years in Africa (in Tanzania and Somalia), where I worked for health organizations in the 70s and 80s. This has influenced my artistic work a lot, however I do not copy rituals.
