Tumultuous premiere of “The Shoemakers” by St. I. Witkiewicz staged by Tadeusz Kantora took place 9 May 1972 in Theatre Malakoff in Paris. Critical reviews resulted in taking off the play just after 20 performances. Kantor summed up: “Paris theater has not experienced yet a true avant-garde.” This publication is the first attempt to present the creation process and circumstances of production of “Shoemakers” in Paris. It includes recently found and collected documents and memoirs of French artists participating in this show, fragments of Witkacy’s play and the cast.
