Cricoteka in Performa 13 programme

Curated by Joanna Zielińska

21th of November 2013, 6 pm
Performa Hub, 13 Crosby Street, New York

Can Objects Perform? is curated by Joanna Zielińska with Cricoteka Centre for the Documentation of the Art of Tadeusz Kantor in Krakow, in anticipation of the Centre’s reopening in 2014. The event has been developed following Radical Languages, a programme of performances curated by Maaike Gouwenberg and Joanna Zielińska at Cricoteka in 2012.

Can Objects Perform? is a programme of screenings and performances that draws attention to the work of the Polish artist and theater-maker Tadeusz Kantor (1915-1990), and the way in which the concepts that Kantor developed through his art and writing are in evidence in the work of contemporary artists, particularly in their treatment of objects. The evening features the work of Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, Dominika Laster, Natheniel Mellors, Shana Moulton, Agnieszka Polska, Salon de Fleurus and Catherine Sullivan.

The evening features a keynote lecture by Dominika Laster about performing objects and theatre of Tadeusz Kantor; Agnieszka Polska’s film Future Days (2013), an animation with images shot on the Swedish island of Gotland, which imagines a fictitious afterworld in which artists from different generations meet after death; The Saprophage (2012) by Nathaniel Mellors, a video taken on an iPhone in which the footage has been purposefully damaged and distorted creating surreal forms of image and language; Elements of Marvin Gaye Chetwynd’s Erotics + Bestiality; and Shana Moulton’s performance SPF 2013 which ties together the artist’s video series Whispering Pines and found material from pharmaceutical adds, a TED talk, Todd Haynes Safe (1995), a documentary on a DMT research study, Pink Floyd and Enigma. The works by Catherine Sullivan address a broad spectrum of historical and cultural reference and often involve multiple collaborators such as composer Sean Griffin. The evening will end with walk to Salon de Fleurus, an educational institution dedicated to assembling, preserving and exhibiting memories on early modern art. It is a permanent exhibit, titled From The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, located at 41 Spring Street, New York, which has been open to the public since 1992.
